IDRA 14 CLASS 2007 NATIONAL
CHAMPIONSHIPS
Despite
constant rain and often the vagaries of fickle winds the IDRA 14’s held their
Championship last weekend in the beautiful setting of Carlingford Lough –
surely the most scenic sailing location in
The
event was sponsored by “INTERREG East Border Region Funding” and “Experience
Carlingford Lough” and we would like to take this opportunity to thank them for
their generous sponsorship.
The
shore organisation of the host Club under Commodore Tim Gibbons and Sailing
Secretary Kieran Cranley proved excellent and over 110 people were accommodated
either camping in the Club grounds or in local bed and breakfasts. The facilities and social events laid on for
the competitors were thoroughly enjoyed by all.
As
the Class is now largely
We
have had very successful Northern Championships in Killowen each June for the
last 12 years. During this period we have developed a very good rapport with
both the Club and its members and this year we decided to hold our National
Championships in CLYC for the first time.
Race
Management was under the control of Principal Race Officer
During
the delays due to the light conditions competitors distracted their
frustrations by engaging in some robust water fights which were only broken up
when the wind filled in again – with some frantic bailing being done to rid the
boats of the contents of their water throwing activities!
Light
winds did not however prevail throughout all the races and there were
occasional strong gusts - which resulted in “thrills and spills” and some
competitors taking an early bath.
24
boats from five different Clubs took part in the event – split into Gold &
Silver fleets. Racing was very close
throughout the event with the final results for the top five boats in each
fleet being decided during the last race with Alan Henry & William Gordon
of Sutton Dinghy Club clinching the Gold Fleet and

• Diamond Jubilee - Nationals 2006 - Enniskillen
Record turnout for Diamond Jubilee IDRA 14 Nationals.Alan Carr and Barry Kelly won the 2006 IDRA 14’s Diamond Jubilee Championships held by Lough Erne Yacht Club in Enniskillen. The entry of 26 boats broke the previous record set in 1996 and augurs well for the Official Diamond Jubilee Event to be held in Clontarf Yacht & Boat Club on September 8th/10th.
After three days of very close racing Alan Carr & Barry Kelly in 14/38 “Starfish” emerged by one point as the new National Champions.
Principal Race Officer Fred Ternan set excellent courses making the best use of the moderate to fresh conditions. This resulted in very exciting sailing for all concerned. Thrills and spills were the order of the day for many competitors with the boats, equipment and crews being severely tested. 14/51 (Paddy O’Kelly & John Ring) tried hard to become U Boat 51 with a spectacular dive into the Lough. They (also in another race) had an unusual collision with 14/107 (Joanne Sheehan & Therese Clarke), which ended up with both boats capsized and the rigging fully entwined. Meanwhile, 14/141 (Tony Doody & Marjo Moonen) while correctly calling for room at a leeward mark, capsized on top of the mark resulting in the mark being totally obscured under the mainsail. This resulted in lots of confusion, as the following boats could not see the mark at all.!! All told we had more capsizes in this Championship than any other in memory. Whilst all of this made for tired sailors we are glad to say that once showered and in the bar they were quickly ‘revived’.
Going into the last day the event could have been won by any of the top three boats and the final two races were hotly contested to the end.
Three boats, 14/1, 14/6 and 14/157 were competing in the event after full refurbishment into racing condition last year. 14/6 in particular was singled out and great credit for this is due to her owner Paul McNally. Paul incidentally is a talented bagpiper and piped in the new champions Alan Carr & Barry Kelly at the prize giving. The age of the boats does not matter in our Class – two of the boats (14/1 & 14/4) date from the founding of the Class in 1947 and 14/6 dates from 1947. Only one GRP boat (14/125 built 1978) finished in the top 5 in the Gold Fleet. More of the old boats are now being restored and we hope to have over 30 boats at next years Championship.
The Class were delighted with the organisation of LEYC both afloat and ashore. The welcome we got from both Club and members could not have been friendlier. Special thanks must go to Race Officer Fred Ternan who organised the event and also Bobby Lee and his family who looked after all our needs ashore - including bar and catering.
As usual the Class had the usual array of “camp followers” who go to all our events. This resulted in every available inch of camping space being utilised for the now familiar tented village. Others huddled in caravans, in motor cruisers and the remainder in Hotels and B&B’s. The social activities were very well attended which kept the Club bar busy until the early hours each morning.
We would again like to thank everyone in LEYC and we would strongly recommend the Club as a suitable venue for all Classes to consider. We will definitely return for another event in the future.

Frank
Hamilton & Jennifer Byrne win the 2006 IDRA 14 Northern Championships
Sailed in perfect weather in the
picturesque setting of Carlingford Lough the IDRA 14’s held a very successful
Northern Championship on the weekend of 1st / 2nd June.
The event was again hosted by the
Carlingford Lough Yacht Club in Killowen (near Rostrevor). The Class as usual
camped beside the Club and the social activities kept the Club bar busy until
the early hours each morning. The shore followers outnumbered the sailors by
four to one and goes to show that a friendly Club can host an event that
appeals to all sailors, their families and their friends.
A full programme of four races was
held and Frank & Jennifer emerged the worthy winners with three firsts and
a second.
The Club presented each entrant with
a plaque to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the event and the
Class made presentations to CLYC and to each of main Club personnel involved in
the organisation.
We now look forward to continuing
this happy cross-border relationship for many years to come.

• CHANGE OF VENUE FOR 2006 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL IDRA 14 BOAT OWNERS, CREWS, FRIENDS etc
CHANGE OF VENUE FOR 2006 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
THE NEW VENUE IS LOUGH ERNE YACHT CLUB (Enniskillen)
THE DATE FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIPS IS AS ORIGIONALLY AGREED - 9TH TO 12TH AUGUST 2006
As most of you are by now aware Lough Ree Yacht Club (Athlone) discovered a problem in relation to running our Championships on the above dates. They offered us the alternative of holding it a week later.
The Class Committee, after considering all options, sought an alternative venue, as some people in the Class could not change their holiday plans once booked.
We are now pleased to announce that Lough Erne Yacht Club have agreed to hold the Championships in their lovely setting on Lough Erne (of which most of the Class have very happy memories of our Championships there in 2003). Their facilities are excellent and we feel certain we have located a fitting location for our Diamond Jubilee Championships.
In 2003 LEYC Club personnel were very helpful in all aspects of hospitality – organising heritage trips, helping find garages to fix punctures on the Sunday, providing help with broken equipment and (most importantly) their bar staff stayed on duty very late into the night to accommodate the thirsty IDRA 14 hardies!!.
It proved a wonderful place for the children once they had lifejackets on!!!
We will contact you again shortly when we get more information on Bed & Breakfasts etc. The local hotel is a very nice one - The Manor Hotel & Leisure Centre (Killadeas, Co. Fermanagh) – approx half a mile from the Clubhouse – and they rent chalets as well. Camping is available beside the Club.
In view of the slightly longer distance to travel from Dublin (approx 110 miles – of good roads!) the race on the evening of Wed 9th Aug will be a practice race. The first Championships race will be on Thurs 10th in afternoon (not before 2pm) Full details of the race times, entry fees etc have still to be agreed with the Club.
The Class trust that everyone in the Class will now try to make it both an enjoyable and memorable event and here let’s beat the number of entries (25) which we had at our Golden Jubilee in 1996.
With best regards to all
