Dún Laoghaire

Have you sailed dinghies in the past and are now thinking of starting again? Maybe you sailed as a junior and were too busy to keep it up, but now have more free time or want to sail with your own kids. Perhaps you raced dinghies in your home city, but have now moved to Dublin and want to sail again.

If so, the answer may be to join the IDRA fleet in the Dun Laoghaire Motor Yacht Club, either by buying your own boat or crewing for somebody else. There are also opportunities to help out on race committee boats.

Founded in 1965, the Dun Laoghaire Motor Yacht Club caters for all types of craft and for all types of people – the only common denominator being that they get their enjoyment from boating. So if your leisure pleasure is serious sailing or just ‘messing about in boats’ and if you are looking for friendly companionship which will last a lifetime – Welcome aboard!

Racing

We race weekly during the main sailing season on Tuesday evenings and Saturdays

We try to hold racing on most Sundays from November through to March, weather permitting. You can find news and updates here, or on our Facebook page.

Note: If you sail from Dun Laoghaire, you don’t have to join a club. You could instead become an individual member of Sail Ireland (Though club membership or individual membership is obligatory for racing) and park your boat in the fee paying public boat parking area in the harbour. However, a club membership would offer you more opportunity to socialise and get to enjoy the apres sailing facilities with like minded individuals.

Social

With all his/her needs provided afloat and alongside, the sailor will find nothing lacking in the facilities of the clubhouse from hot showers to good food and drink and “…a merry yarn with a laughing fellow rover…”!

14/133 Dutch Courage

14/133 was in inactive in storage in Wexford for a number of years prior to negotiations between Julie Ascoop and Michael de Hoog which resulted in 14/133 being purchased by members of the class in Dun Laoghaire to use it as a training boat for new members to the fleet. It was later agreed to rename her ‘Dutch Courage’.

The following months, members came together to renovate the boat, so that it could be put back on the water for racing. These improvements included new rubbing strips and a new tiller. The boat was subsequently given to SiD (Sailing in Dublin) on an exclusive loan basis between 2019 and 2021 to introduce their dinghy membership to the IDRA 14 class.

The boat was returned to the DMYC class in early 2022, who have since recruited new people to sail the boat for the coming year. She is currently based in the DMYC.
